River School Students Prepare for Cross Country Dash to New Mexico

In early April, the River School will hit the road.  High School students Lizzie Moore and Aedan McGrath and teacher/director Louisa Carl will begin a two week road trip to New Mexico and back.  The trip will provide an opportunity to literally see America, with a close-up look at the rich culture and history of New Mexico.

The students choose this destination for a variety of reasons: because they are taking a Spanish course this spring, they look forward the chance to practice their Spanish speaking skills and they hope to explore the span of history the state contains, ranging from 15,000 year old indigenous settlements, to the Spanish land grants still held by the same families, to the influx of modern day “snowbirds.”  The warmer climate was also a big draw!

“I’m really excited to see the variety of artwork in New Mexico.” says Lizzie Moore, “It’ll also be fun to go to all the unique places you could only find in New Mexico, like Roswell. I’m planning on getting a big flying saucer poster!  I’m also hoping to bring art supplies and get inspired by the scenery there.” Moore, a young artist, has shown her work in various venues including Waterfall Arts, and hopes to attend art school after her coming senior year at the River School.

One of several things the group hopes to see is the Easter weekend Corn Dances at one of the Puebloes near Santa Fe.  “We’re hoping to meet up with one of the Audubon Expedition Institute (AEI) buses which is also going to be in the area for the dances, so the students can meet some other people involved in alternative education, at the college level in this case,” explains Carl.  AEI is also based in Belfast, and has been doing trips to the Southwest as part of its college program for over forty years.  Carl is a former faculty and administrator for the AEI program, and has brought her passion for hands-on education to the River School.

“ I love the history of the area, and the beautiful scenery we’ll see.  It’ll be really fun to learn about an area so different from our own,” says Aedan McGrath.  Aedan is a big history buff, and is especially interested in the old forts and role of the military in the changes of political power in New Mexico.

The group will camp out during the trip, visiting national and state parks and wilderness areas, and cooking simple meals.  Students will keep a journal of their experiences during the trip, incorporating writing, collage, drawing, and other media.  They also hope to post some in-the-field accounts of their journey on Village Soup.

River School Receives Grant from Maine Community Foundation

The River School, a new small independent high school with a student-centered philosophy, has been awarded a $2000 grant from the Maine Community Foundation’s Waldo County Fund. This grant money will be used to help support the school’s start-up year and cover associated expenses.  “We are very pleased to receive this support from the Maine Community Foundation,” said Larry Reynolds, the River School Director.  “We already have five students, and expect more to jump onboard as the year progresses.  It will be exciting to see how this group of young people interacts with the community, and how they choose to shape their education.”

The Maine Community Foundation is a statewide organization that works in partnership with donors and community groups to strengthen Maine.  For more information on their grant programs or to donate, visit their website at www.mainecf.org or call toll-free at 877-700-6800.
