Physics
Teacher: Jamie Wilkinson
An introduction to physics, including theoretical understanding of energy, motion, mass and magnetism. This will be a “hands on” course utilizing student and instructor built experimental mechanisms. Successful experiments will prove the respective laws while allowing students to see, hear and feel physical phenomenon. Construction, modification, success and failure will further enhance the student's understanding of various laws and theory. The successful student will have a solid understanding of the physical attributes of the universe coupled with an enhanced ability to create, modify and understand experimental mechanical apparatus.
Art

Supervising Teacher: Louisa Carl
Each student will design a syllabus for an independent study art course that meets their own passions and skills. The syllabus must include a title, description, objectives, assignments, assessment and grading methods, materials list, and resources list. This syllabus will be the framework for the work done over the semester.
English
Teacher: Jeff Smith
This is a multi-cultural view of American literature with emphasis on 19th-20th century and contemporary North American novelists, poets and playwrights of both genders, who are ethnically and culturally diverse. Authors such as John Steinbeck, Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Chief Joseph, Harper Lee, SojournerTruth, Margaret Atwood, Langston Hughes, Shirley Jackson, S.E. Hinton, Louise Dickenson Rich, Sarah Orne Jewett, Mary Jo Salter, Cathy Song, Richard Kim, Sherman Alexie, Gish Jen, James Alan McPherson, Annie Proulx, Khaled Hosseini and others of student interest may be included as time permits. The book and other multimedia resources such as critical reviews, journals, videos and Internet websites may be used. Students will write critically about what they read and think of the author’s works.

Students this semester will explore a range of outdoor activities and skills, such as snowshoeing, skiing, skating and other winter sports. They will also explore the use of a variety of old-style weapons such as archery with bow and arrow, atlatal throwing, and fencing. There will be a variety of teachers leading the various blocks of this course.
Irish History/Culture
Teacher: Kathy Goldner
Explores the history and culture of Ireland from ancient times to the present. Students will read out loud from different periods of Irish literature: novels, plays essays, poetry and fables. We will study Irish history and watch films about Ireland, listen to Irish music, cook Irish food, make an Irish history time-line, a large map of Ireland as well as a 3-D relief map. Students will devise projects relating to this course.
